Why Your Home Wi-Fi Slows Down and How to Fix It

A video call freezes at the worst moment. A show buffers every evening around eight. One room of the house barely gets a signal at all. Most people assume the internet plan is too small and pay for a faster one, then find nothing really changed.

Often the plan is fine. The problem is somewhere between the box on the wall and the device in your hand, and a lot of it you can sort out yourself in an afternoon.

Start by splitting the problem in two

Run a speed test on a device connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, then run the same test on Wi-Fi in the same room. Most computers and many streaming boxes can take a cable.

If the wired result matches what you pay for but the Wi-Fi result is much lower, the issue is your wireless setup. If the wired result is also slow, the problem is your connection or your provider, and that's a call to them rather than a fixture you can adjust.

Where the router sits matters more than people expect

Wi-Fi signal spreads out from the router in every direction and weakens as it passes through walls, floors, and large objects. A router tucked inside a cabinet in the corner of the house is fighting that from the start.

  • Put it somewhere central, not at one end of the house.
  • Raise it off the floor. A shelf or a desk is better than the ground.
  • Keep it in the open, not inside a media unit or behind the TV.
  • Move it away from other electronics, thick metal, and water. A fish tank or a boiler between the router and your living room really does absorb signal.

The two bands, in plain terms

Modern routers broadcast on two frequencies. The 2.4 GHz band travels further and gets through walls better, but it's slower and crowded, since baby monitors, older devices, and your neighbours all use it. The 5 GHz band is faster and cleaner but doesn't reach as far.

Phones and laptops usually pick a band on their own, and often they hang onto a weak 2.4 GHz signal after you've walked across the house. If your router lets you see connected devices, check which band each one is using. Some routers let you split the two bands into separate network names so you can choose deliberately.

Interference from other networks

In a flat or a terraced street, you might have twenty other networks within range, and many of them sit on the same channel as yours. That's like everyone trying to talk in one small room.

Most routers pick a channel automatically but rarely revisit the choice. Restarting the router prompts it to choose again. Some let you set a channel by hand; on 2.4 GHz, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the ones that don't overlap.

Too many devices, or one greedy one

A house today can easily have thirty connected things: phones, laptops, TVs, speakers, doorbells, thermostats, game consoles. Idle devices use very little, but a single large download, a console updating a game, or a cloud backup running mid-evening can eat most of the available capacity.

If slowdowns happen at predictable times, look for a scheduled backup or update and move it to overnight.

Old hardware

Routers age out. A unit that's six or seven years old, or the free one bundled with an older plan, may not support current standards or handle many devices at once. Before replacing it, check the manufacturer's site for a firmware update, since those can fix bugs and security holes. If the router is genuinely old, a newer one is often the single biggest improvement available.

When a mesh system helps

A mesh system uses two or three units placed around the home that work as one network, so your device hands off between them as you move. In a larger house, a home with thick walls, or anything on multiple floors, mesh usually beats a single router.

A plug-in range extender is the cheaper option, but many extenders cut your speed roughly in half on the extended side and create a second network name you have to switch to manually. They can rescue one dead corner, but they're a patch, not a fix.

Wherever you can, run a cable. A wired connection to the TV, the desktop, or a mesh unit takes load off the wireless side and is far more stable for anything that matters.

A quick checklist

  • Test wired versus wireless speed to find where the loss is.
  • Move the router somewhere central, high, and open.
  • Restart it so it re-picks a channel, or set one manually.
  • Check which devices are on which band.
  • Reschedule big downloads and backups for overnight.
  • Update the firmware.
  • Consider mesh for a big or multi-floor home; use Ethernet where you can.

Most slow home Wi-Fi comes down to placement, congestion, or aging equipment rather than the plan you're paying for. Work through those first, and if the wired test is still slow, that's the point where the conversation moves to your provider.
